Peace Corps in Turkey

The Peace Corps does not currently serve in Turkey. The Turkish Peace Corps program ran from 1962 to 1971, but dissolved due to a number of reasons; among them, underutilization of volunteers, limited involvement from the Turkish government, and strain from the conflict between Turkey and Cyprus.

Despite their limited presence, Peace Corps volunteers in Turkey made a positive impact on the local people, especially those in rural areas. Volunteers taught English, introduced more effective medical care techniques, improved orphanage conditions, and helped rural villagers lessen their poverty.

There is currently no word on when or if Peace Corps activities will resume in Turkey, though, since the program ended with friendship between Turkey and the USA, it is not impossible. As an alternative, Turkish Immersion Center may offer travel programs to Turkey in the future. In the meantime, we offer Turkish language classes and local events for those interested in Turkish language and culture.
